Thunderstruck

20140112_134312I have a confession to make: I might be a closet AC/DC fan. If you ever pull up to an Edmond intersection next to a nondescript Jeep and believe you feel an earthquake coming, it might just be yours truly damaging his eardrums in the car next to you.

On a more obvious note, I am not a closet NBA fan. I have nothing to hide. Once upon a time, I would tell friends that I had no interest in pro basketball, only the NFL. My, how times have changed. A little franchise known as the Hornets came to OKC a few years ago and rocked us like a hurricane, courtesy of a cranky persona called Katrina. The rest is history.

I enjoyed the Hornets. I even grew to like George Shinn. It seemed that he was embracing our fair city, and working to call it home.

None of that compared to what I saw last night. I was already a big time Thunder fan. I’ve been blessed to attend a number of games over the years, but what we witnessed off the court from the superstar we reliably refer to as “KD” was icing on the cake in an already wonderful relationship OKC shares with the boys in blue.

The NBA game is fun, but OKC makes it something special. I’ve attended a few games in other places, good places to boot, like Dallas, and Houston, and San Antonio. Nothing compares to what we share here. We embrace our team, and strangely enough, they embrace us back. More importantly, they remind us of what it means to be human, in a world where no one is really a “star”.

That being said, KD struck us all with his humility, his love, and gratitude in sharing his life story while accepting the MVP award last night. If you have not watched footage of his comments, you should. Watch it with a box of tissues.

Accordingly, my prized Thunder playoffs hat purchased circa 2011 merits its place as number 9 of 27, save 1. The stories are too good to not share. The colors bleed too brightly to not wear proudly.

So, yes, I confess. I am indeed Thunderstruck, as if you couldn’t already tell. Something tells me you might be, as well. If so, sing along with me the next time you feel that strong vibration at the intersection.

Thunder, Ah yah yah yah yah yah…
